July 30, 2009 - The good news (if you're a Nintendo shareholder or just like to place wagers on such things) is that Nintendo is still making lots of money. The bad news is that they're making about a third of what they made one year ago. But, 650 million dollars in profit in one quarter is still a good chunk of change if you ask us!

Nintendo issued today its earnings statement for the first quarter, covering April, May, and June. The company saw sales of 253.50 billion yen, down from the 423.38 billion of the same three month period the year before. Operating income was down from 176.89 billion yen to 64.82 billion.

As reason for the fall, the company cited a lack of hits on both the DS and Wii as well as the rising yen.

The DS sold 5.97 million units worldwide over the period, bringing its life to date total up to 107.75 million. Wii fell from last year's 5.17 million units to 2.23 million units this quarter, bringing its life-to-date total to 52.62 million.

Total software sales for both platforms fell. DS went from 36.59 million last year to 29.09 million this year. Wii fell from 40.41 million to 31.07 million units. These figures include only retail games.
