Play-Chan, scheduled to be released on the 21st of February supports both the video format MPEG4 and plays MP3s. Here are a few details regarding Nintendo's alternative to other media players.

* Weighs about 16g
* Accepts SD cards
* Video resolutions go in 28x96(Sub-QCIF), 176x144(QCIF), 240x176, 320x240(QVGA), 352x288(CIF)
* Bit rate 64kbps ~ 1Mbps
* Frame rate 6 ~ 30fps
* Video sound samples at 8kHz with a bit rate of 32kbps
* On GBASP - 4 hours of video playback, which isn't bad
* On a Nintendo DS - 5 hours of video playback, which again, isn't that bad
As for MP3 playback:
* File format: MP3(MPEG1 Layer-3)
* Bit rate: 32k,40k,48k,56k,64k,80k,96k,112k,128k,
* 160k,192k,224k,256k,320k(bps)CBR,VBR,ABR
* Sampling frequency: 32kHz,44.1kHz,48kHz
* ID3 tag: v1, v1.1, v2, and v1/v2 mixture, v1.1/v2 mixture
* On GBASP - 16 hours of MP3 playback, excellent return from a full charge
* On a Nintendo DS - 20 hours of MP3 playback
The Play-Chan is not compatible with the Game Boy Advance, it can be used with a Game Boy Advance SP however. The Nintendo DS will be able to reproduce stereo sound with MP3 and video files whereas the GBASP can only produce mono sound. The program on the Play-Chan cannot view picture formats such as JPEG. Media Stage, the software which organises your music on the Play-Chan is compatible with Windows XP and above and will need at least a Pentium III processor or at the very least a AMD Athlon 1GHz. For optimal performance on the computer in terms of writing, 256MB of ram or above is recommended. The Play-Chan currently accepts up to 1GB SD memory cards. The Play-Chan comes in two versions, one with the additional Media Stage 4.2 software.
